Business Success Tips For Entrepreneurs
One of the failures I had back in 2002 was a network marketing deal. How many of you have been to some of these network marketing meetings? You know what I’m talking about. The ones your friends drag you too and a whole bunch of people are trying to sell you stuff. Usually some protein drink, anti aging shampoo or some miracle juice.
Anyhow, when I first saw the opportunity it was through direct mail. I received this little booklet about making anywhere from $2500 to $25,000 per month. They told me to buy a $45 dollar CD and go to the next “meeting” that was in my area.
So I did. I will say this. It was one of the best things I did. It showed me there were many other ways to make money beside going to some job and busting your butt 40 hours per week.
So I went to the training and got the “vision”! In reality it wasn’t so much the company or the product that was being presented to me but the idea of something different.
What I didn’t like was when they told me to recruit my family and friends. First thing I questioned why were these people telling me to go to my family and friends when I was signed up with a booklet that someone sent me from California. Ahh, people have different “systems” just like we have in the online world today.
There are many ways to build different businesses’s and it’s your job to find the one that best suits you.
I come from a small town and with that comes small town mentality. It definitely was not going to work trying to sign people up I knew so that was 100% out of the question. What I needed was proof that my system worked. I had to get results with my business before I could even think of the family and friends approach.
So I worked my tail off and got myself in 40k debt because I was promoting an old company with outdated marketing methods. That’s another story in itself.
Listen, I am not opposed to the MLM model. I don’t hate network marketing. I think for most people getting started without a lot of capital it’s a legitimate business model. The problem is most people are doing it all wrong. It’s got nothing to do with the opportunity. If you gave me that exact company that put me in 40k debt and told me to build a profitable business right I could do it no problem.
So your probably asking yourself how is that possible. Well, it’s about your approach to the business. Listen, it was definitely harder back then to build a business but people for the most part are still just people. Ya, things are a bit faster nowadays but relationship building is still just that.
Let me give you two reasons why people don’t succeed in their network marketing company.
The first reason people get into the network marketing business based on whoever gets to them first. Usually they have no idea about the product or the service. They don’t know who owns the company. They have no idea how the business compensation plan works. They just know it’s a way to make some money and doesn’t cost much to get in.
Many people get sucked into the business looking at the money or the greed. How they can make 10k a month in the next 90 days working 2-3 hours a week in their pajamas. That’s all BS. If you’ve been working online or you’ve been in a network marketing company for any period of time you know this isn’t true.
When they realize that a network marketing company is a real business and takes real work most people fall by the waist side. We have all seen it or been there ourselves. People take the 200 or 300 dollar loss and quit. Usually happens within 2 or 3 months when they realize there ADP is charging there card for some product sitting in their garage.
Listen, with most network marketing companies it’s about timing. There is a certain period where all the growth is going to happen. That usually happens when they start expanding internationally. If you get into a company 20 years later it’s saturated.
There are many leaders out there in older companies that will never admit to saturation but it is indeed a fact.
My first company Herbalife I remember going to training and big events. You would see the Chairman’s club members on stage showing 100k check per month and how they did it in 4 months. What they failed to mention was they were the first person to open up Japan. I can give MANY examples like this in MANY different companies.
Here is a check from one of the Herbalife distributors. I blacked out his name for privacy reasons. He actually put this on the screen when I went to a training in NYC right after the World Trade Center attack in 2002. A check for over one million dollars for one month. I found out some time later he did in fact open the country of Japan and he literally became a millionaire overnight. It wasn’t so much it impressed me but I will say this. It was very eye opening and gave me hope to make 5k a month which was life changing at the time!
It’s still possible to make real money in older network marketing companies but it’s going to take more work and more time. Till this day I have friends and see people building up 8 or 10k checks per month but it’s taking them 2 or 3 years to get there. If they weren’t treating their MLM business like a real business that would never happen. Maybe 5% of distributors in ALL companies are able to profit with their business. 95% lose money.
So for the average person starting with a network marketing company especially an older one there chances of success are low because they aren’t going to do what it really takes to be successful. Period.
It’s not because the product isn’t good. It’s not because it’s a pyramid scam. It’s because people in general didn’t take their business serious.
The second reason is people leading with their product. I got this shampoo, I got this vitamin, I got this anti-aging cream blah blah blah. Then they start talking about the company. They been in business for 12 years, it’s a publicly traded company blah blah blah. Then they will talk about themselves. Here’s why I want to get involved because of this and this and this and this and this. Wrong!
The way to do it and this goes for ALL network marketing businesses. You have to lead with YOU! People buy people. Then people trust you, they like you, they buy you. Then you lead with the product. Then they buy the product, they see the vision, then you can talk about the company.
Most people have it all wrong. They lead with the product or the biz op and people don’t care because people don’t like to be sold. Especially from someone they don’t know. In their eyes you are nothing more than a snake oil salesman.
I see so many people send me Facebook message, email and even call me on the phone. People I have never met or maybe we chatted on Facebook once in the past three years. But now they are hitting up on some product or business.
I understand. People are excited and trying to get results to sell themselves on the business. Most of these people have never made a profit in their lives. What I usually do is offer them some advice. Nowadays, if your in business you know this, you have to pay to play. That is just a fact.
Building a business online is much different than it was back in the day. If you want to use social media it’s about capturing emails and building relationships with your lists.
Different marketing strategy but your still building a relationship with people. That is NEVER going to change in network marketing.
Ever have someone add you as a Facebook friend and immediately they send some business opportunity in the chat box four seconds later. That does not work. When you take someone on a first date do you try and take them to bed before the movie? Think about it.
People want to know you. What do you believe. What do you stand for. Are you a person of integrity and so on. Are you adding value or just pushing product. Can we just be people and connect?
Always remember this and it works like this in almost every business not just network marketing. It’s not what you do but how you do it.
