If you’re a surfer you’ve probably heard that Kelly Slater Wave Company opened the wave pool to some Pro’s just recently. Most surfers have also heard WSL holdings acquired Kelly’s wave pool or part of it. Yes it’s true. They now have majority stake in the best man-made wave!! So what does this agreement mean?
From what we have heard thus far there is no talk of Kelly’s wave pool being on the world tour. It’s possible they may have WSL-branded “training centers” where pros can systematically go and train. Financial details have not yet been disclosed. What we do know is Kieren Perrow (Commissioner) visited and was stunned by his experience at Slater’s wave pool. Across the board the WSL leadership community knew this was to big to pass up.
As things emerge it will most definitely change the professional landscape in the sport of surfing. Only time can tell if it will be for better or worse.
For us surfers who can’t always get on a plane to find waves can agree this wave is nothing short of amazing. Whether or not you think these wave pools are a good idea for the surf community I’m sure you’d visit if one was built only a few miles from where you live.
When my friends saw some of these videos they were txt’ing and calling about taking a trip there. Like every other surfer on planet earth we all the know the reality it’s still not opened to the public and we really don’t know when that’s going to happen!
Kelly Slater Wave Pool Videos
We all know that man made wave pools have been around for quite some time. When I was a kid we use to go to Rocky Point in Warwick RI and they had a wave pool. That was almost 35 years ago. Salt water was actually taken out of Narragansett Bay and filtered. Somehow they made waves but you could hardly even body surf them.
Over the years people have built stand up waves and decent waves you can ride in a pool like setting. However, I have seen most of them and nothing compares to what Kelly Slater Wave Company has put together.
Obviously it has taken Mr. Kelly Slater and his company a considerable amount of time and money to put something of this magnitude together. These waves are just a freak of nature. These waves are nuts. This is push button barrels at your fingertips.
This is What Kelly Slater had to say about his project via Instagram when he first announced:
Slater hasn’t been winning competitions in the ASP as of lately but who does he have to impress. He has 11 world titles at the moment and an absurd amount of wins on the ASP tour. I think you’d agree he’s achieved something very special here for both sports and science. Where does it end.
The only two question left are – Will there be a wave that goes left and when EXACTLY will this freak of a wave open to the public.
Lets hear your thoughts in the comment section below. Where EXACTLY would u want Slater to build these wave pools and why???
